they should just fix IE then make a huge announcement that the others are messed up and everyone needs to download the new one or something else.

That's really stupid. CSS being some obscure thing? BS! CSS is great and I love PNG as well, but no, I can't put them in my sites because Microsoft's a *****!

Sure, but the majority of peoples businesses run on what? Windows, why? becasue there is so much software for it that they can get their job done fast and easy. So what if they rush to release stuff, sure its cool that its free, but its not what microsofts about, they are a very sucessful company, no matter what anyone says. You all know, that if you could, you yourselves would rather own Microsoft rather than Redhat Linux.

Sure, they probably use alternitives to IE, heck, i use firefox. If so, why does this problem even matter to you?

Its not that easy, they have to develop it first, then promote it, it just doesnt happen in one night, it takes time to fix it.

I mean really people, do you really think that Bill Gates is out to kill all your computers? Hes not, hes running a company, and he seems to be good at it.

I don't care about IE, I use firefox. My next site is going to make very much use of the PNG file format.

There's always one M$ defender...

Anyways, this guy doesn't speak for all of the IE development team. Most of them are atleast semi-aware of web standards and intend to implement that in the next release.

It's already fixed in IE6. Save some weird float issues with lists.

Yeah, well at least some people at MS are listening to the masses of web designers. IE7 may have tabbed browsing support, and will most likely have full png and css support, if we get lucky.

That still doesn't mean it isn't obscure to 90% of web users out there. Ask around, people who just use the internet for fun / email / business about what they know about CSS, most wont have a damn clue, and touting things like "Full CSS 2 support" will mean very little to naught to them.

I think one thing that most people, especially on TF need to get through their thick heads is this:

The most applicable population sample for 'how much do people care about _____ on the internet' questions is a general crowd. Yes, that means the druggies who come on MSN to chat about the latest party, the people who speak ebonics on their blogs, and people who are all the rave about all-in-one printers.

Most of the 'applicable sample' doesn't give a crap about web standards. Yes, they are important. But to argue that they are a marketing point for browsers, or any other internet company is just absurd.

It doesnt matter if they can use the webstandards as a marketing point or not. What matters is if they include them. Just because people dont know about something doesnt mean it is acceptable to give them an inferior product. There is absolutely no reason for Microsoft to ignore web standards with the new release of IE. If they really want to grab ahold of and retain their 'market share' as far as browsers go, they will make IE 7 the best browser they can. If full standards support is not included, all of us nerds will happily continue to use alternative browsers because they will undeniably be a superior browser. Standards support is hugely important, whether you know about it or not.
