Hidden extensions

I googled this to see if i could shed some light on the subject, but i didnt find andything that would help unless i wanted to pay for it. How does google hide their extension when you search. IE http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8 ... sion&btnG=Search
There is no search.php? or whatever they use, how do they do this?

Here's a simple example, put this into your htaccess file.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(index|files|search|whatever) $1.php [NC]

basically replaces replaces index?sdfdf or search?dsf into index.php?sdfs and search?dsf
