Storywise? It's based off the book, one of the best books ever written. Yes, it is an awesome movie. I usually hate Sci-fi but this is awesome. Trust me, it takes a lot for me to say that about a movie.

I, Robot = I, Rip.
The story a total knockoff of the terminator 3.
* SPOILERS *
I, Robot: Will smith, some chick, and 'sonny' (the robot), must save the world from the corrupt robots, that are controlled by an evolved supercomputer program called VICKI.
Terminator 3: John Conner, some chick and arnold schwarzenegger the robot, must save the world from robots that are being controlled by a computer program virus called skynet.
Only big difference is that in I, Robot, they managed to kill the robot source and everything went back to normal.

What you fail to see, is that the story predates terminator. Nice try though.

Asimov's first attempt.
What does the new movie have in common with Asimov's writings?
* The title: I, Robot
I, Robot is the title of Asimov's first collection of short stories. It consists of nine stories about positronic robots, united by a consistent narrative in which a reporter interviews the character Susan Calvin about her life working with robots. Oddly enough, Asimov did not come up with the title, but rather his publisher "appropriated" the title from a short story by Eando Binder that was published in 1939. New editions of I, Robot, featuring a still from the movie on the cover, have recently been published, and are on sale at amazon.com and other locations.
First screen play attempt: 1970s.
Ellison's script for I, Robot, dubbed "the greatest science fiction movie never made," was actually written in the late 1970s but floundered because of supposed high production costs and other assorted difficulties, which are explained in the introduction. The Citizen Kane-esque plot follows journalist Robert Bratenahl's quest to unearth the exact nature of the relationship between legendary robopsychologist Dr. Susan Calvin and Alfred Lanning, director of U.S. Robotics and Mechanical Men. What he ultimately discovers, however, is so much more. Ellison adroitly borrows subplots from several of Asimov's original I, Robot stories-although the script is more the fruit of Ellison's mind than Asimov's-and along with Calvin are the familiar faces of Mike Donovan, Greg Powell, Robbie, Lennie, and other robots. Ellison and Asimov make a helluva combination, and although Ellison's script may never make it to the screen, having this beautifully illustrated edition of it is almost as satisfying. Perhaps if this volume sells well enough, I, Robot may yet be filmed. Let's hope. Highly recommended.Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.
This movie is not a rip of anything.
