Audio Problem

My sound has been working fine all day, but just now I tried to play some music and all I am getting is a crackling noise, or nothing at all. I have reinstalled all the drivers and everything for the soundcard, but the problem persists. I don't think I blew it out, because like I said, it has been working all day and I haven't changed any settings.

Does anybody know what might be wrong and how I can fix it?

Thanks.

how loud is the crackling noise? if you dont mute your microphone i know itll pick up sounds and cause some annoyance - check that. otherwise, hook up some different speakers and see if the problem persists.

The mic's not plugged in, so that's not the problem.

I tried new speakers, and I had the same sound. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the sound card (SoundBlaster PCI) because when I try to play something in WinAmp, the little bars - the thingy at the top that goes up if the song is loud and down if it's quiet - move at first like the song is playing, then just go down to nothing.

I'm running Windows 98SE, if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

The crackling noise wasn't really loud. Sometimes nothing comes out at all, and sometimes it's crackling.

Also, when I try to play audio, sometimes my computer stalls or runs really slow, but when I close the application, the computer is fine again.

maybe its your program?

Are theses songs that you have listend to before and did they worked just fine? If you just got them, like off kazza they maybe messed up. Try it on a cd *if it isn't* and play it in your cd player and see if thats it.

Check ALL your sound setings. try different programs and just about anything you can think of. Im sure the last thing you want to do is buy a new sound card.

Yeah, I don't want to buy a new sound card.

It's not the program, because any program that tries to play audio gives the same result. It's not the audio, because the audio I'm trying to listen to is all stuff that has worked before.

All my audio settings look normal.

I fear the worst for you then. If you have another vid card on anotehr comp or something or maybe a real cool naber who would let you check and see if it is indead that, thats what I would do to absolutely verify that it is your card.

:grumpy F*cking SoundBlaster. This is the second card of theirs that I have bought that just stopped working for no reason. I guess that's what I can expect from a $30 sound card. Damn.
