exporting to swf from illustrator problems...

i have made a background (in illustrator CS) for an animation i am making in flash mx. When i import the swf into flash it looses it's original appearance and creates 1200 symbols along with it.

I was wondering if anybody knows a way to completely flatten the illustrator file to preserve it's appearance and make it 1 symbol in flash, but keep it in vector format?

tried it - doesn't work - objects loose colour&fill.
