Or I could do it by duplicating the layer, which makes alot more sense.

Duplicate the layer, fill, distort. I can't get the distortion to look like it's flat though, or like it's the shadow of a cup.

It doesn't look that bad. What's wrong with the shadow is the blur around it.

just dublicate the layer and make a silhoute out of your object and give it a little outer glow(black) and then distort it till you have it right at the place you want it.

A good shadow is not so blurry near the base and gets blurrier at the end of the shadow. I usually use a quick mask + gradient + gaussian blur. 40% to 50% opacity is also good, no shadow is opaque
