metal part looks air brushed

What i would do is make whatever shape you want to use, fill it with a dark grey, and then use the dodge tool set to hilights and the burn tool set to shadows, Thats what it looks like to me

That's what I was thinking.. Although I'm still trying to find a tutorial on it. I've tried everywhere (well, not EVERYWHERE:p) including GT, still can't find anything!

Definitly dodge/burn method. Fill your shape with a dark grey
(or a grey that you love) and dodge/burn the edges around :-]

Have a look over at purephotoshop.com he's got a freeform
airbrush tutorial around, have fun.
