Here is a quick example.

The original image was found doing a google image search for "hair" - This is rather basic, as the image was pretty much a "gimmie" but you can see how it works. It took me maybe 4 seconds to create the mask for this image. Of course, there is more work involved in images that contain a more complex background, but its still the same technique in the end.... I chose this image as an example...easy to understand.

grubnubnub,

Can you reccomend any tutorials that would teach how to do the masking technique you described above.

I'd also like to know how to extract fine detail like hair.

Thanks

>>>pfft.. i'm not dancin around all day gettin every detail with the eraser

lol...then don't expect to have quality manipulations then!

Eraser, mask, lasso, pen tool...all different ways to cut something out, but there's no cheating exctraction when there is fine detail involved.

Invest some time into the design!

Ahh... very well said...

I like the lasso tool and my drawing tablet! Works great! Very easy to do as well.

All the mentoined methods, lasso, extract tool, pen, etc. each have their own merit in particlar situations. For fine hair, channel masks will usually pull off the most precise selections.

The following tute, describes extracting fireworks, but the concept for any intricate edge is the same.
Here

If you have any trouble with this tute, ask away.

I haven't used any of the mentioned except for the lasso tool, but I really want to try the others some time.
