Is it worth getting a new video card?

I am currently running a P4 2.0ghz with 256mb ram.

My video card is a Geforce 2 64mb, and i want to upgrade it.

But my motherboard only suppots up to AGP 4x.

Is it worth getting a new video card, and if so how good a card is it worth getting with only AGP 4x?

I want a card that is DirectX 9.0 compatible.

ATI Radeon 9600XT, its not partucularly pricy, but previews on anandtech show its capable of running Half life 2. Its directx 9, and seems to beat nvidia quite well for same price.

AGP 4x is almost as good as 8x, really i dont think uld even notice a thing, its just overkill, perhaps later on like a yr or 2 it might help alittle. Is your card a GTS? or an mx. if its an mx, then itll definatly be worth upgrading, so much more features and graphics in the newer performance cards like pixel shaders, vertex etc etc.

If you have more money than that and want a better card, the ATI 9800XT ofcourse.

I'm in the same situation as you. I have a radeon 64meg card with an older motherboad (2 yrs, i think). I'm waiting until hl2 comes out....then again I dont have the cash to drop on a 9800xt....but nvidia is coming out with the 6200....and im guessing ati will come out with a new card new (?). So I'm waiting until the price drops. Which im assuming will be sometime soon.Wink ......i'm sticking with the same motherboard until i build a new comp......who knows when that will be.

actually there coming out with a 6800 :P i agree that the 9600 is a good choice for a cheap price, thats what i run. I wouldnt fork up the money for a 9600xt personally because if you were gonna give up more money id go straight up to a 9800 pro or xt

6200.....wtf, i was thinking of the 5200 and whether it was fx5200 or 5200fx.....but yea the 6800 looks impressive so far and ati is coming with their new card.....hopefully the price on the 9800xt drops enough that its buyable.....$400 for a video card....thats almost 1/2 of what my whole computer cost....

hey well if I were you I would focus on ur motherboard first. then get the new x600xt tht is coming out. This card wont cost to much. also if ur wanting to play the latest games I advise u to get another 256mb. but if u wanna spend loads of money then wait cse thr is a new mother board coming out which takes 2 graphics cards at once and 8gb mb.
