annual salary for graphic designer
Just curious ... What is an average annual salary for a designer? I know that it depends on where you live, but it seems like I am barking up the wrong tree here. People are offering me jobs for $11 - $13 dollars an hour and I laugh! I have five years experience and hold an AA in graphic technology. I have a nice looking portfolio too. Do you think it's too much that I am looking for an annual salary of $38k to $40k?
I would appreciate your 2 cents on this.

Although I feel your pain, but you are making a big mistake thinking a $30 an hour job is just going to pop in your lap. everyone starts somewhere. you never know if that $11-$13 an hour job would be the determinig reference you need to get that $40k job a year.
Do what you want, but I'm sure are plenty of other people in your area with that much experience with an AA degree. What you should do until you find that $40k a year job is to work on building professional references so you can beat those other guys when the time comes.

you have to look at it from an employer's point of view. would you hire a guy who went to school for 2 years and received an AA or a guy who went to school for 4 years and received a bachelor's degree. also, what is your 5 year experience in? agency/print/web/multimedia? you could probably find a job with the specs you want, but it's all about selling yourself. it also depends on where you live. in some towns $11-$13 is great. not where i live. you also have to take into consideration the size of the company and of course, sluggish economic times.
i'd be interested in seeing your work as well. do you have a portfolio online? this could also determine your job search.

I am in the process of building my on-line portfolio. I specialize in print. I am versed in design for advertising, logos, brochures.... you name it. I also have extensive layout and design experience. I am currently employed at a local newspaper doing layout and design. I also shoot for the paper and am a staff writer. My client list includes Little Caesars Pizza and the 4-year college here. I have designed all the college's catalog covers this year and have done their photo shoots for the double trucks inside the catalogs.
I guess the reason that I am asking is I am now making $16.00/hour and I am always seeking something better. I feel that I am not an entry level employee and $13/hour is what people are offering me.
That's why I asked.
Thanks for your replies.
