Elevated
i want to create an website, with elevated borders/menus/interfaces so to speak. with fireworks. I tried an tutorial, but because of some corners in drawing, the effect isn't the same. Could someone help on this one?
I added a Sample with some of my borders/rooms and with an example interface out the tutorial. The Background needs to tranparant on mine cuz of my background.
Thanks
Dude

Thumbs up Andy, you know where to move it if someone's got a fireworks question.
Duderino: What do you mean that because of some corners, the effect isnt' the same? I see only one object with a bevel in that picture, and it seems uniform all around the figure, except for the corners, where there is a shadow on the lower right corner of the bevel.
Are you saying that the bevel you made isn't the same as the bevel shown in the tutorial? Or are you saying one corner of the bevel isn't like the others? I'm a bit confused.

because of the make up, i suspect, all the inner and outer shadows/glows will do its own thing. The yellow borders i created were build up with Regtangles and Square, turn 45 degrees. When grouped, the nicely, elevated border looks dark and loose instead of on piece.

Ah, I see. You have several objects in a group, they're not linked together, they're just grouped together in a container. Therefore applying shadows and bevels will result in a non-uniform effect.
I think the way you have it, it should work if they're grouped (once they're ungrouped you'll lose the effect), but if that doesn't, let me give you another option.
ungroup all of your rectangles and such. shift-click each object to select more than one object at a time, select objects that you physically want to join together to make one big object that the bevel/shadow will be applied to.
when you have all those objects selected, go modify > combine paths> union (or use the modify panel available under the window menu) -- this will combine your selected shapes into one shape. then apply your bevels/shadows.
another alternative to getting single shapes is the pen tool. you can hold down shift while using it to create perfectly straight/perfect 45 degree angle lines. experiment with it to see how it works.

thanks iJeff,
Your advice helped alot, but still it isnt quite right imo. Can perhaps see where i go wrong. Mind that you need that other file on my first post as a comparison, but i can show you what it is so far.

What don't you like about it? Is it because the bevel isn't on the 1-pixel sides you have there? You'll need to give it more than 1 pixel to work with, that's not enough for a bevel

To me,
The elevation looks unnatural, and a bit hard in comparison to the "blue device" i gave in my first post. I think it needs softening. Anytips on that. It is not the sides, but more the general picture. I show you what i mean in an attachment.
Thanks again for your attention m8

Ah, just play with the bevel settings in the little effects panel. See what sliders do what, one of those controls the angle of the bevel so you can determine where the shadow's going to be.
If you want an additional shaddow, go effects > shadow & glow > drop shadow.
