Input Please???

Hello all, I am thinking about getting in to 3D design but have no idea where to start. I want to design 3d objects for the web similar to this ( http://www.theskinsfactory.com/skinsfactory/?page=fvportfolio&id=25 ). I talked to the guys over at the skns factory and they said they atarted with a 3d model then finished it up in photoshop. What I was wondering is which one is better to do this with, Lightwave or 3D Studio Max? I am a student and I can only afford a student copy of one of these 2 packages so what i am asking is which one is better for web design for one and which one is easier to learn? both packages look pretty intimidating to me. Please give me some input on this matter! thanks...

BTW, I have no 3d experiance, really wanting to learn though...

Lightwave will give you the best bang for your buck, There is no argument there.

Outside of the 3d package, it all comes down to skill and how well you know the tools.

It is an art.

I have seen some awesome 3d work in the cheapest package available to man. This is because the person who created it, knew what each and every toool was capable of doing. If you want to learn a 3d package, you must dedicate a serious amount of time to it... 3d art is a lifestyle, you live it. The cool 3d stuff you see on the net is not the product of 22 hours of playing around with 3dsm... it is dedication.

If you want to make a purchase in a 3d package to learn the fundamentals, my opinion is lightwave (wait until 8 is out). I encourage you to make your own decision though, but, when it comes down to price, and what you get for the dollar amount, I guarantee you will go with lightwave. Just take a bit of time and compare all the good packages. I spent a week looking over reviews and websites, I didn't have a bazillion dollars to blow, but I wanted the most for my dollar. I chose Lightwave.

But it really comes down to how bad you want to learn it, in the end. All the major packages out there are capable of high quality renders, it just depends on how well you know your sh*t.

<edit> oh.. as far as 3d for the web.. makes no different what package you use, it is the process used in delivering the final project to the web that makes the difference.

wierd... seems like it would have been much easier to make purely in photoshop... call me old fashioned.

and yes, lightwave is awesome, i agree

edit: oh and i believe you can download a trial version of lightwave from www.newtek.com (very limited capabilites) and there is a program i have hear of called blender that may be free to download?
