It's exactly like the word tomato:
In the UK(and in Italy) it is pronounced - Tom-ar-to
In the US it is pronounced - Tom-Ay-to
It's the same word, it was named by the Italians, who, as far as i am aware, pronounce it Tom-arrr-to so, therefore strictly speaking Tom-ar-to is right. But that doesn't stop most people say Tom-Ay-to, the finder intented it to be tom-ar-to but people still say tom-ay-to beacuse it's more gramatically correct so anyone who says Tom-ay-to and keeps on going on about Jiff being right is a hypochondriac.
I say GIF and thats all i have heard people say, I never knew it was JIF until before now, i probably won't change but thats only beacuse it's a habit calling it GIF.
(p.s. correct me if i'm worng with the pronounciation of Tomato in Italian.)

JIFF is the way to go, that way it never gets confused with gift.
ie:
jack: john, i emailed u the "gif" of the new toy.
john: wtf? how the hell do you email a toy?

jpeg/jpg = Jay Peg
gif = giff
bmp = bitmap
png = ping
cmos = see moss
bios = by oss
pwnd = pohn'd
That's the way I'll always say it, and no one can really stop me

graphics interchange format
<graphics, file format> /gif/, occasionally /jif/ (GIF, GIF
89A) A standard for digitised images compressed with the
LZW algorithm, defined in 1987 by CompuServe (CIS).
Graphics Interchange Format and GIF are service marks of
CompuServe Incorporated. This only affects use of GIF
within Compuserve, and pass-through licensing for software to
access them, it doesn't affect anyone else's use of GIF. It
followed from a 1994 legal action by Unisys against CIS for
violating Unisys's LZW software patent. The CompuServe
Vice President has stated that "CompuServe is committed to
keeping the GIF 89A specification as an open, fully-supported,
non-proprietary specification for the entire on-line community
including the World-Wide Web".

Maybe I'm weird, but I spell out file extentions and application acyronyms letter by letter, rather than trying to create words and pronounce them.
GIF is just that to me. G, then the letter I, and F.
I don't call mIRC "merc" or anything like that either.
*shrugs*
