Recommended Book for this..
Before I post I want to let everyone know that I did use the search option and I read reviews on amazon.com and barnesandnobles.com but none of the reviews really say what im looking for...
I know nothing about PHP but I can and will learn when I find the right book...
Im basicly looking for a php/mysql book that covers some of the stuff involved in making a online gaming ladder/tournament website like http://www.cybersportsladder.com ... yeah i know i can buy that script but i want to learn and make my own ... I got a full year to learn... Any books you think that you can recommend for under $40 will be greatly appreciated .. Thx

P.S. I Dont want a book for beginners I want a book that covers some of that stuff im looking for no matter how hard it is... THX

here's a similar thread different site:
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board ... 5&o=0&fpart=
i myself learned alot from www.phpforflash.com books published by http://www.friendsofed.com/
after that i pretty much learned everything by looking at the source from existing work and website tutorials.
if you're going to learn php and mysql don't say to yourself i only want to learn it so i can do this one thing. make sure you learn the basics so you can apply them to any problem.

Absoultely right, once you know syntax all you need is php.net
Don't bother with Beginning PHP... everything in there is covered in the book Proffesional PHP4 by Wrox, which I own. I found the book very useful when I was learning, although the OOP chapter could be a bit better. Also, sitepoint put out a book - I would HIGHLY recommend that book simply because sitepoint is so damn good.
