And this would be based on your decades of experience with the industry?
Great name, by the way. Heh heh heh. Pretty funny...very "Master of Disaster" like on Hackers. Hehehehehe....
Maybe you think it's dumb, and of course you're entitled to your opinion...free speech is what this is about, after all. But I think the millions of people grabbing songs on iTunes would tend to disagree with you, and the RIAA has no problems with us. In fact, they're very pleased indeed.

Depending on the contract, with trance labels, signings are usually made on singles, rather than albums - and they are primarily released on vinyl. (With the singles comes remixes - so it's not just one track). When artists produce their tracks, they submit it to their labels. If the label likes it, it will be released. I'm not sure when the negotiations happen - if the contract applies to all releases, or a new contract for each release. The artist does have a huge say with the details of the release (for example, what are on sides A and B).
The best move is for an artist to start their own label: look at Paul van Dyk (Vandit), Armin van Buuren (Armind), Tijs Verwest (Magik Muzik) -- to name a few trance producers -- who all have their own successful labels.
Back to downloading music - it is only illegal if you don't own the rights to the song. Without the rights, it is theft. You're taking an artist's work without their permission. People fail to realize this because they're not actually stealing something they can touch - only 1's and 0's.
MP3.com is 100% legal because artists choose to put their music up for download.

Here's another question:
Is it illegal to record music off the radio?

Although downloading music is definately a bad thing, I wouldnt listen to a lot of the music I listen to today if it werent for downloading. I havent downloading anything new since last may or june, and I have been buying CDs more lately. I have even bought several CDs of bands that I had downloaded, just because I wanted to support them. I have found that I am a lot more cautious about buying CDs now, I like to be able to listen to the full songs at CD quality to know whether or not I want to get the CD.

I think the RIAA is greedy - I think the artists dont get NEAR what they should and are getting screwed badly by the RIAA.
Just some food for thought:
If its illegal then why is radio free?
why is digital music channels on direct tv not a paid subscription?
(it comes with basic)
why are there dual cassette machines on almost all cd boomboxes specifically for the purpose of dubbing a tape?
why are there cd recorders? not cdr or cdrw on a computer but like the philips home recorder? same with dvd recorders and dual tape vcrs
I lean both ways - I think the artist should be supported but I dont like paying full price for a cd that has one good song I like so the labels can parley the 5 good songs the artist recorded over 5 albums and make 5 x times the money

And Samson, why are their guns in the world?
It all depends on what you do with what you have.
Radio is free because the radio stations pay the artists whenever they play their songs.

and I found out that Artists get a budget (say $$$$$) or whateva and they don't make a penny until they sell at least that amount of money's worth of albums. I didn't know this til last week, maybe it's because I'm stupid
