media player problems

I was using Windows Media Player to view some video a friend sent me. And well, I only get audio. No video whatsoever. Do I need codecs? Are there any sites that have ALL the video codecs one could possibly need? Or at least the main ones?

U'll need codecs. Don't use other all in one packs they'll cause conflicts. Those below are good all-in-ones. Trust me, I'm a seasoned anime fan and I have lots of bad experiences with lousy decoders.

Get winamp?

It's the codec not the player.
Video is encoded in some format and it'll need it's decoder to enable playback. codec = encoder decoder
WMP and Winamp or any other players does not come with all necessary codecs installed by default. WMP can auto get codecs but u'll need to install some yourself.
Winamp is only decent for audio, it's video capabilities are inferior to WMP.

imo, the klite codec pack is just great. it has no problems playing anything. if youre looking for an all in one (i only know of 2 of those.. the ace mega codecs and the klite codec pack) thats the one to get.

also next time, post this in the computer talk section.

I also have a related problem. Whenever I play the said video files, and consequently close Windows Media Player, I get an error stating that mplayer2.exe crashed. So if anybody knows how I can remedy that, please let me know.

don't use mplayer2.exe. that's the old player that still come with the newer versions of Windows.
What OS r u on? u can install WMP9 for Win2K onwards or WMP7.1 for other Windows.

my rule of thumb is.. wmp6.4 (mplayer2.exe) runs fine on win2k up until sp3. from sp4 and on, it doesnt handle video well at all and you'll need to upgrade that sucker.
