media player problems

I was using Windows Media Player to view some video a friend sent me. And well, I only get audio. No video whatsoever. Do I need codecs? Are there any sites that have ALL the video codecs one could possibly need? Or at least the main ones?

Thanks.

U'll need codecs. Don't use other all in one packs they'll cause conflicts. Those below are good all-in-ones. Trust me, I'm a seasoned anime fan and I have lots of bad experiences with lousy decoders.

Those Experiencing Problems With Anime Downloaded Frm BT,IRC Or Any Other Sources Can Try Using These Codecs, Most Of The Time Glitches In The Vids Are Caused By Incorrect Or Corrupted Codecs

Personally I Do Not Like Nimo's Codec Package As It Causes a Number Of Codec Problems On My Comp

This Is Just a List Of The Commonly Used Codecs So If You Are Not Able To Find What You Are Looking For Here, Try Searching For It In www.google.com

DivX 5.05 (http://www.divx.com/divx)
One Of The Most Common Encoding Format Used, This Is a Must Have

DivX 3.11 Alpha (http://www.psychlo-anime.net/main/downloads/divx_311alpha.exe)
Required To Play Older Anime Videos Encoded In DivX 3.11

XviD (http://home.pacific.net.sg/~fluix/XviD%20Codec.exe)
Another Popular Encoding Format Used

OGM/Vorbis (http://callatg.com/~asti/codex/ogm_quickzip.zip)
New DVD Rips Are Changing to OGM For Their Encodes, a Nice Addition
p.s. OGM isnt a video codec, its more like a "container" like AVI thus the video is still being encoded in other formats like XVID, DivX etc etc

DirectVobSub 2.23 (http://www.psychlo-anime.net/main/downloads/DVobSub_2.23.exe)
Filter needed to view subtitles of Anime encoded in ogm format.

AC3 (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ac3filter/ac3filter_0_69b.exe?download)
An Audio Codec Used For Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch Sound Reproduction

GSpot V.2.2 (http://www.headbands.com/gspot)
A Useful Utility To Determine What Sorta Codecs Are Needed For a Particular Vid File And What Sorta Codecs Are Installed In Your Computer, Use This If You Are Unsure What Is Causing Playback Problems

CRC Checker (Shareware) (http://home.freeuk.net/traction/SFVChecker.zip)
The CRC Checker Calculates a "Cyclical Redundancy Check" Value For The Files You Specify, Its Basically Used To Determine Whether a File Is Damaged By Comparing The CRC Value
(You Will Need To Know The CRC Value For a File First Before Being Able To Compare It With The Resulting CRC Value Generated By The Program)

Popular Codec "All In One" Packages

ffdshow (http://flow.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ffdshow/ffdshow-20020617.exe)
One Of The Widely Used "All In One" Codec Packages

DefilerPak 1.08a (http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/DefilerPak-1.08a.exe)
The DefilerPak As a Minimalist Collection Of Video And Audio Codecs

What's included?
----------------
* ffdshow: ffdshow will play back DivX 3.11a, DivX 4, DivX 5, and XviD movies.
It also includes powerful post-processing filters.
* AC3Filter: Decodes AC-3 audio streams.
* Elecard's Moonlight Odio Dekoda, for MP3 and MP2.
* Ogg DirectShow filter: Enables support for .OGM containers and Ogg Vorbis
audio streams.
* Matroska DirectShow filter: Supports the powerful new Matroska A/V container format.
* DirectVobSub: Supports a wide variety of subtitle formats.

It's the codec not the player.
Video is encoded in some format and it'll need it's decoder to enable playback. codec = encoder decoder
WMP and Winamp or any other players does not come with all necessary codecs installed by default. WMP can auto get codecs but u'll need to install some yourself.
Winamp is only decent for audio, it's video capabilities are inferior to WMP.

imo, the klite codec pack is just great. it has no problems playing anything. if youre looking for an all in one (i only know of 2 of those.. the ace mega codecs and the klite codec pack) thats the one to get.

also next time, post this in the computer talk section.

Thanks, guys.

I also have a related problem. Whenever I play the said video files, and consequently close Windows Media Player, I get an error stating that mplayer2.exe crashed. So if anybody knows how I can remedy that, please let me know.

Thanks.

don't use mplayer2.exe. that's the old player that still come with the newer versions of Windows.
What OS r u on? u can install WMP9 for Win2K onwards or WMP7.1 for other Windows.

my rule of thumb is.. wmp6.4 (mplayer2.exe) runs fine on win2k up until sp3. from sp4 and on, it doesnt handle video well at all and you'll need to upgrade that sucker.
