as pointed out by A4d, because PS is a raster based graphics program, when it enlarges or decreases an image, it has to interpolate (try and guess) how to add-in or remove pixel information. If the increases/decreases are fairly small, OS does a fairly good job, extreme changes in size are not possible without poor quality.

Thats just the nature of pixels.

You can try to use the 'unsharp mask' to try and sharpen an image after resizing, but your results will vary depending on the image and the size change.

General rule: Always make your images at the final intended size

Or larger than the intended size. Its easier to scale down than up.

Also, does anyone else laugh whenever someone is looking at a picture in a television show or movie and some person standing behind them says "Wait! what's that? Enlarge that piece..." and then they draw a little box, then it gets pixelated, then clears to crystal precision...
I want whatever program they're using....

get focus magic works better than unsharp mask, but its not free.

if you have the actual photo then i would say that it is best to rescan the image and then enlarge it within the scan software. Then, send the image to photoshop and save it just as it is. Then, whenever you play with it, save it as something else. That way you will always have the native image.

this might not be any help, but what the hey-

i've heard of a program that uses algorithms instead of pixels. so you can resize it as much as you want without any distortion. or something like that. does that sound familiar to any one?

I laugh at those movies too, but doesn't it seem like there's mroe information in moving images even without looking at the individual pixelized frames? For example, by looking at a video image of something simple at low quality, after a couple frames, its clear what is there, but if you were to look at an individual frame, you wouldn't be able to tell what it was. Can't you.... enhance.... the image James Bond style by looking at the multiple images?
