Am I the only one?

This is more of a rant than anything, so feel free to ignore it as absolutly useless.

Am I the only one who's absolutly sick of seeing the flat 2-d csll-shaded vector art?

I think what annoys me most about it is that that's what most people think of when they hear the term "vector art" and it really cheapens the medium, because good vector art is so much more.

I'm not saying there isn't some cool cell-shaded type work out there. There is, but the majroity of it is just boring. It's become more about copying a fad than mastering the medium and pushing yourself and the program to the limits of what can be achieved.

Fah.. it irks me.

it is very fad-like.

But like micro-text and abstract 3d shapes, I'm sure the posers will die out and the true artists will continue to create quality art.

How can it cheapen the medium? How are the people who do it posers?

Vector art is a division of digital art. Cell Shading is a division of Vector Art, as are all the other types of vector. It depends on the persons style of Vectoring. You can't dismiss it saying it's just a 'fad' when it is a perfectly legitimate style of art. Maybe you don't like that style and that's fair enough, people are allowed their opinions, but just because YOU don't like it don't dismiss it as being a 'fad' rather than a STYLE of vectoring...

I love the style, and I agree that it's a legitimate style of art.

Perhaps "fad" wasn't entirely correct. I should have said "the current art trend on the web", just like how last year it was micro-text and obnoxious splash pages.

Why call them 'posers'?

I never said it wasn't art. There are some truly great works in this style out there, and I've done a few pieces of it myself. I'm just annoyed that it's become so "trendy" that it's all people think of when they think of vector art, and vector art is so much more. *shrug* and that due to its "trendy" nature, there's a lot of bad stuff out there, too, because it's being overdone.

The thing is, that just like all other effects that people share around like those tentacles and crystals, it got overused, and not only overused, but also got the wrong exposure.

I love vector art and I don't think that cell shading isn't that great, in fact, it is the best for printed works (although in some cases I would also like to use Illustrator's gradient mesh tool, but it simply isn't possible on most jobs I take).

I think that people should learn when and how to use it, not just toss it around just because it looks cool, then yes, it will look boring, but other than that the essence is great and you can have endless ways of making and expressing it.

Exactly! That's what I was trying to say, but you said it so much better. Thank you!
