the e stands for education, it was designed for schools and such, so it has a bunch of features, but it is still relatively cheap. I was actually looking at possibly getting one a year ago, but I ended up going with a pc.

Yup...cheap mac basically that runs really good for the price. Grin http://www.apple.com/emac First given to schools, then released to the public as a lowend G4. If you are thinking about a Mac and don't wanna pay an absurb amount of money then switch.

omg, none of you know anything:(

ok, the emac was designed as a base consumer model, and is great in every aspect except the grahpics card, which is only a geforce 2.

and NO it's not a more advanced imac, they still MAKE imacs, they just revamped em to have flat-panel screens and those are geared more towards the rich kids, and emacs are geared towards poor folk. the specs are basically identical between then, just the imac costs alot more. and to be perfectly honest, the imac is such a waste of money. for the same price, you can get a g5 tower that's alot faster/better with a nice moniter and a printer then the top of the line imac.

so, if you DO plan on getting a mac, do NOT get an imac. you will be severely ripped off. emacs are very good deals, as are g5's. and you can get the old g4 towers on the education plan for 1199 (i think) decently set up. so not too bad all around. but imac is baaaaaad deal.

eMac wasn't designed for consumers though...hence the e Wink Aimed at educators and education institutions and then released to the consumers later.

From apple-history.com...

Introduced in April 2002, the eMac brought G4 power and a 17 inch monitor to the familiar iMac form factor. Based on the same architecture as the flat panel iMac, the eMac was initially available only for educational markets. It shipped in two configurations: a 32x CD-ROM model for $999, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM model for $1199.

In June 2002, the eMac was released to the consumer market in a single model, with a CD-RW drive and 128 MB of RAM, for $1099. In August 2002, The eMac received a speed-bump and feature upgrade, and was released to the consumer market. The $999 model ($1099 consumer) now shipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. A $1499 800 Mhz model was also released to the consumer market, with 256 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive and a CD-RW/DVD-RW SuperDrive. In January 2003, these prices were dropped to $999 and $1299 respectively.

well, all i know is one of my sisters has a new emac, the other a new imac, and for the money paid, the emac is a MUCH better deal. unless you REALLY need the extra deskspace, emacs are very good for home use as well.
