How do I...?

I am brand new to Adobe Illustrator...everything is so complicated to use... Anyway, I was just wondering how to fill text with a gradient.

Select the text then:
Under the Type menu, select: "Convert to Outlines"

Now you can use the gradient fill tool on your text.
