help needed about 'marketing strategy'

I just wanted to ask how important people think that marketing strategy is towards the success of a business and why.
I would appreciate all comments. Thank You.

rofl. it's probably the second most important thing there is! only behind the product itself. take a look at aol. they make a completely crap product and offer a crap service. but they have incredible marketing, hence making them the largest isp in the US. probably the world.

company's live and die on marketing.

I would say marketing is more important than the product. I personally hate marketing as 99% of the time it is basically lies to get a person to buy your product using over inflated promises - but thats just me Grin

As adam points out, AOL is one good example, but at least AOL works at least half of the time. Look at all these herbal drug companies, that claims that the pill they have will cure you from everything from common cold, to HIV and cancer. And of course, the incredible diets all around the marketing world, just look at the Hollywood diet, makes people using it as labeled sick and sometimes irreversibly so..

All of those above rely on a highend large scale marketing campaign, and when the FDA finally gets to it, and bans it, as harmful to the American public, then the operation is ceased and they walk away with millions, if not billions, never to be seen again......

It's sad but true

i'm new at this and i'm driven to learn as many things as i can since i'm in the business. i'm more involved in the marketing of the product than that of technical matters.

I could not disagree with the negative rap that marketing gets these days, especially when we've experienced marketing in all shapes and sizes-it's nothing new. But on the other hand, it goes both ways. You cannot isolate marketing as something that 'dupes' it's market. I think the responsibility is shared between the manufacturer/marketer and the consumer.

As to the importance of marketing strategy in a business, it's obvious and inevitable. Think: MTV, AOL, Nike to Oprah, FedEx, etc. It's almost synonymous to money, if not already.

A company is not able to survive if not for the marketing efforts and initiatives to introduce it's product/service to the market.
