materials editor(3ds max 4)

Hi everyone, I am fairly new to 3d studio max but i have used other 3d programs. Only for simple things though. I don't really understand the materials editor. I know how to apply textures to objects, know how to change basic things like hte opacity and lighting and things like that.

What I really need to know is how to make a soft material. A material fabric or carpet... or like a blanket. The only way I have found to do it is to make a texture that looks like carpet and apply it to the object. That usually looks too stiff and static though.

Thanks for all your help in advance

Also the first link is really advanced...I could never figure it out, it also requires another program (not sure what). Just do a google search on "Displacement in 3d studio max" if you really wanna learn displacement mapping.
