if youre looking at doing gaming, or serious rendering, i'd go with the desktop.
also: if you feel comfortable doing it, I would recommend buying parts seperately and doing it yourself. It can be cheaper, and you can end up with a far superior system to a dell. sites like www.newegg.com give you good deals.

Yeah, they are the same thing. Unless you are going to be playing games or 3d rendering, I would probably go for the laptop. However, I will always want to have a desktop computer as my main computer, then if I can afford it, I would like to have a laptop as a secondary.

Laptops are about twice as expensive than desktops for the same specs. Also, you can't really "build your own" with a laptop, which is by far the cheapest way to get a desktop. Laptops don't age well (a desktop you build yourself is easy to upgrade later on). I wouldn't splurge for a nice laptop instead of a desktop unless you have the money to spend on it and plan to do a lot of travelling. Or, you can always get both! Nowadays $600-700 will get you a nice desktop capable of doing basically whatever you need, then for about 350 off ebay you can get an older laptop. Pop linux on it and you are ready to go!

I wouldn' be donig a lot of design on a laptop. For the following reasons.
1) Considerable Slower than a Desktop
2) Colors are More Distorted and Off on a Laptop Screen Compared to Desktop
3) Laptop Cost Twice as Much for 1/2 the Performance
4) Laptops usually max out at a low resolution compared to Desktops
I've never been a fan of laptops, sure they look nice and can be moved around easily, but they don't seem to offer anything great unless you are a serious business man who is on the go a lot.
