that could be a couple things. you may need more memory, which is unlikely, the little black cable that plugs from your cd drive to your motherboard or sound card might be loose, it might not be plugged in at all, the master volume controls for your pc, check them make sure they are on. if none of those work, mabye you need to open your cd drive up and blow some air in it, make sure the lens is clean. also mabye the laser is diying. if none of these work, im completely clueless

plug in some headphones to the cd-rom and see if you get sound. if yes then it's either a problem with your soundcard, your volume control, or maybe the audio cable (that's the little black cable agmatrix was talking about). if no then your drive is F*ed up. i once had a problem where the laser got stuck and i had to take apart the drive and whack it with the back end of a screwdriver a few times. that's probably not the problem since you said it doesn't play audio cd's. i assume that means data cd's work.
once you isolate the problem alittle more we can help you.

ok what i think the problem is that the cd's puase becuase my hardrive is reading the information on the cd's! i want to know how to give more ram maybe? to the cd player to imporve the porfemance and stop the pausing.
The cd's would have any new cd copyright protection on them which could be the problem since my old cd's dont pause.

there could really be a couple different things going on here. not much can really be deduced unless you give more information about your computer [processor type and speed, amount of ram, type of cdrom, hardrive, etc, etc].
initially it sounds like there could be a problem with the CD's read ahead or buffer. on the other hand, if your harddrive is accessing, then this could really be the culprit. harddrive accesses can slow a computer down, and may possibly be interfering with CD play. need more information to really help, however.

to give it more ram you would need to
A: get more system ram.
B: increase virtual ram (not a great idea.)
how old is your drive?
what speed is it?

if this is happening then there are a few possible reasons.
1) your system is slow, and i mean SLOW like under 233mhz
2) if you're playing your cd player through software then it will probably skip whenever you do something stressful to the system. on my system winamp skips whenever i scroll a webpage! (400mhz)
3) your cdrom is slow under... 12x speed i'd say.
4) those funky copy protection things on cd's screw up the play.
the most likely explanation as i can figure it is this. you've got a buttload of spyware or other apps that are constantly accessing info on your HD therefore eating up cpu time which makes your cd skip...
the other explanation is that your cd's have the funky anti-copy stuff on them, which totally screws up playback on a computer. they didn't really think that one through all the way. idiots. a way around this is to take a black sharpie marker and draw a thin line around the outer edge of the cd. if you hold the cd in the light you'll be able to see where the music is written (from the inside out) and then there will be blank space and then on the outside of the cd is more written stuff. the outer stuff is the evil copy-right stuff. just mark over it, and they will playback like normal. i suggest you try that on a cd you don't much like though first. although if done correctly it wont mess up playback any, if you go over the wrong stuff on accident you just lost a cd.
