You could do it in photoshop, but its a lot easier to do something like that in 3d studio max or cinema 4d, then just put finishing touches on it with photoshop. nice work by the way =)

Wow thats cool! i have posted on this forum a few times b4, mainly just read and take in info. How do you use the polygonal lasso tool to do that??

My technique is to just make a spiky explosion like shape with it, fill it with white and duplicate that layer.
Then I gaussian blur the top layer, then the bottom one with a bigger value.
I colorize (ctrl+u) the bottom one, and change the layer style of the top layer to color dodge and lower its "fill".

Then I usually play around with some more layers and blendmodes till it looks good, in this case i've duplicated the layers a couple of times and rotated/resized them
