what is the best way to extract an image from it's background?
If you have a photo and say you want to just extract say a person from the background and use it on another background, what is the best way to do it?
I'm using PS7 and I would go to filter-->extract image and go from there but the edges don't look clean even if I clean it with the cleaning tool. How do the pros do it when they want to use pictures for sites and stuff? TIA

The Pen tool can sometimes give you a better selection but can take a bit more time

The Pros use the Quick Mask tool to brush in the necessary selections. Check out the help menu in Photoshop for complete instructions.

It depends on your image. If you have strands of hair that you want to keep, the pen tool might not be the best choice, but if you just want to get a basic shape, then use it.
Also, don't forget the art history brush. A lot easier than Ctrl+Z

You could use the lasso or pollygon tool or use the magic wand and manually delete =\ those are alternative decisions
