Newbie question, please help

I recently downloaded a star wars mesh (X-wing) an it is made of lots of tiny little parts which make the animation process much harder. Is there a way to join all these parts to create a single, solid object? I'm using 3D studio max 5 by the way.

try grouping them. Select them all then go to Group -> Group on the toolbar.
