Portraits - Darken Effect Howto

Hey Fellas,Ladies.

I have been searching for ages How to do this Effect when someone is in a dark room and some light fall on their faces. This is commonly used in film posters etc. Parts or the face and body fades to black.

Please help Thx in advance,

i know it can be done in photoshop... but i think for the best effect you best bet would be to actually take the photo with the lighting set up that way in a darkened studio.

i had to do a studio shoot.. and basically there are no lights except for the single one that lights up part of the models face. but as i said, it can be done in photoshop.. but i dont think that way is nearly as good and effective as the photography.

hope i havent confused you too much.. just my two cents Smile

Create a layer behind the picture.. and fill it with black...

Then click on your pic...
then click the mask button.. its down by the layers pallette..
That will add a layer mask to the current layer.

Layer masks allow you to block off certain parts of an image without actually discarding the information for that part of the image.

So you need to grab a paintbursh and set the color to black..
and start painting on the mask which should be the active layer right after you created it.

All parts of the mask that are black will block that section of the picture... and if you accidentally go to far.. just paint with white to reveal the image again...

Grin
I should write a tut about masking.. haven't seen one around anywhere... :P
