Well I'd say Lord Of The Rings is better, but Harry Potter is also a pretty good movie.

I HAVE THAT T-SHIRT! It rocks. I have crack-heads and people with puntured veins come up to me and say they like my shirt.

granted that I really like the movie, but I've taken a bunch of film courses and ... it's kinda hard to justify a movie that doesn't have an ending. I have not read the books and don't know how they go but any self contained film needs beginning (which should last for about 20 min depending on film lenght - just a rule of thumb), middle - the main story, and an end- which LOTR lacked. It seemed like as soon as they went into Moldar or however its spelled. The movie should have been resolved. But the movie finished with the main plot unresovled, in fact I don't know if anything in that entire movie was resolved. To leave minor things unresolved, is good because it creates intrigue and usually points to a sequel or second in the series, to leave major things unresolved, is pretty much a no-no. When you don't resolve anything well then you haven't done your job as a director, screen writer, etc. Once again I haven't read the book, but this is kinda of inexcusible for a movie regardless of what its going off of.

If they gave it a "proper" ending, then there would be no room for the 2nd and 3rd movies... not to mention changing the story in any way like that would have literally enraged millions of LOTR fans. It ends just about in the same place as the first of the 3 books.... actually they added a bit of the start of book 2 and added some extra-long action to the final sequence in the movie, and twisted the story just a tad to give more resolution than the book itself gives (for instance in the book they get there too late find Boromir already dead and it doesn't discuss in detail his battle to defend Merry and Pippin).

If you think about it though, this is the case with most multi-part novels that come out "today" (obviously doesn't apply to classics, as they're already fully written - though the people at the time they were written had to wait too).... you get a book such as Left Behind by LaHaye/Jenkins, and assuming you began reading when book one came out, you then have to wait at least 6 months to a year before the next one comes out to find out what happens next... it's not left fully resolved, in fact often it ends with a cliff-hanger. And yet its one of the best-selling novels in Christian fiction these days.... it makes sense they might do the same with movies at times... its mainly a marketing thing, but then of course if you tried to sqeeze all of them together that wouldn't be much good either lol
Part of it is we've been "trained" to desire an all-wrapped-up ending, and ususally we want it to be a happy ending... so it seems foreign to us if we don't get that at the end of a book or movie.

Peace Smile
