Actually no. Australia was more like a low security prison. Poverty stricken families who stole bread to feed their children where locked up in English jails. When these jails became full they sent most of these people to Van Diemens Land - or Australia.

But it is still fun to scare yanks by giving them one of the following stories, that they always believe (after I explain how Australia is not a country in Europe):

- my grandfather was a convict who murdered 54 people.
- i ride to work on kangaroo
- we all wear acubra hats and carry 30cm knives
- its easy to wrestle a croc
- we all wear Steve Irwin style clothes
- koalas are as common as pets as cats.

And you guys where also settled by the poms, but lucky for the poms you kinda disowned them. I wouldn't want to have to govern an egotistic country that can't take a joke and thinks they are so much higher than everybody else either.
