vector? what is it?

So what is the best vector program? I saw some vector art here and it looks neat.

And by the way what is vector anyway? What is it good for?

I like Fireworks myself.

Vector art is the kind of stuff you see in Flash movies. Nothing too detailed, but to the point. Vector graphics are stored as technichally lines, that connect to form a shape, and the shape they make is filled with a certain color until it hits another shape. It's not stored pixel by pixel like bitmaps and such. The advantage of vector graphics is that they can be resized to virtually any size, and still look good - even zoom in and out. It won't be pixelized.

photoshop for vector art is a sort of oxymoron if you will
photoshop uses bitmaps
illustrator & flash etc use vectors
thus,. using photoshop for creating vector images is not possible. sure you can fake it
but its not vector art

i never liked the fact that people who claim they do vector art, do it in photoshop or paint shop pro..

i love illustrator.. i've never tried freehand though. i use flash.. not for making illustrations though..only for animation. but i'm sayin so, since it's a vector based program also.

PHotoshop has vector shapes... but you can't really do detailed vector art in it. It's not meant to be used that way.

Personally, I like Illustrator. I've used Fireworks, doesn't seem as powerful, but it's been a while.

NOt only do I just like Illustrator's interface and feel more comfortable with it, layer modes + transparency + gradient mesh tool = some really nice capabilities.

I think Fireworks is more web-driven, because it can integrate with flash and dreamweaver easily. There's tools for animation, slicing, image maps, javascript-driven menus, all that good web stuff..
