hello
Status: Offline!

I have attempted to make a list of some of the basic and popular free hosting sites for anyone who has come to this post looking for info. These are probably not the best out there, but if you cant find anything else, you always have them. Most of these have been around for awhile.
---------

www.angelfire.com

20 MB of Disk Space
Easy to Use Building Tools
Page Design Templates
FREE Images
FrontPage Enabled

As ads there is a pop-up I think, with the angelfire logo and a banner in it. Since theres the logo you cant pretend that its not a free host, so there goes any chance of looking professional with your site. I didnt check if its FTP available or not

www.tripod.lycos.com

50MB free disk space for your website
Unlimited free traffic
Unlimited file size
PHP 4.1
PHP Libraries (Send mail, PDF, JPEG, PNG?)
MySQL data base with PHP MyAdmin, an easy web-based administration for MySQL databases
FTP access

The banner is a default sized banner at the top of the page or a popup with kind of the same banner in it (not completely sure on ads). But ads detract from professional look very much. The hosting itself appears pretty good though. I havent tried it myself, so I cant say anything more.

www.tripod.lycos.co.uk

Same thing as above I think, but the banner is a floating one at the top of the page but it fades away after a couple seconds

www.geocities.com

15mb disk space

I didnt find any more data on geocities because their site is awfully badly organized and it was too hard to find anything out about the free hosting, they only give information on their paid hosting plans. The ad is floating on the right side of the screen, its quite annoying. There is the geocities logo on the ad, and overall, the ad is not very nice but it could be worse
There is a File Manager utility, which is a web based ftp alternative. I do not know if there is FTP access available

www.coolfreepages.com

"50+ megs of disk space" (i dont know what the '+' is supposed to mean, is it 50, or more than 50)
unlimited bandwith
Limited file size.( thats unfortunate, it would almost be decent if not for that. the limit is somewhere below 1 megabyte, not sure on precise amount)
PHP4
FTP access

Ads appear in the form of a popup, but its a pop-under actually. they say on their site
"We just open a simple window which will be on the background of the surfer's main browser window, so he (she) will not see it until he actually LEAVES your site! This means, NO LOST TRAFFIC! Everybody wins, including the surfer!! "
Its actually the kind of popunder that goes to the front after about 10 secs. so its definatley not when the surfer leaves the site, but still its not that bad.
There is no coolfreepages logo on the ad. And if you want to hide the fact that its a free host even further, you can choose a different name for your subdomain such as whatever.ionichost.com insead of whatever.coolfreepages.com. But because of the file size limit it counts out alot of site possiblities.

www.fortunecity.com

Up to 25 MB of Disk Space
0.5 GB File Transfer per month
Supports many popular file types
Advertising-Supported
FTP Uploads

Ok I dont know why I included this one. The main page is horriblyy ad-ridden, its sad. I didnt get the chance to try out an account, but I remember attempting to sign up, and it didnt work and I got frustrated ( I dont remember what was wrong exactly because it was a while ago, but i remember i was disapointed)
The ads on fortunecity are bad pop-ups, apparently flashing animated gifs for ebay are pretty common, and I even got a download "Do you want to install and run..?" and it was some thing from Gator once, and another time Comet cursor, omfg thats really pathetic.
I think that there is a file size limit, a couple megabytes I think, or was it 1 mb.. I dont remember.

free.prohosting.com

50 megabytes
1 FTP Account
Site Creation Utility
Custom CGI/SSI Ability
E-mail Support
Unlimited bandwitdth
2MB file size limit

I'm afraid I don't have any more information on this one.

www.freeservers.com

12mb disk space
0.5 GB bandwith
256k file size limit
FAQ support
Sitebuilder tool
File manager
No FTP

Wow, with that 12mb and 256k files, the possiblities are endless.
And the ads include both a banner and a pop-up at once, but I cant be sure on that because I only visited like 2 member pages.

Since Im prone to making errors please point out if I made any. Thanks and have a pleasant day.

Here are some I have used:

http://www.i8.com
http://www.gixxer.com

Both are free but with pop ups and banners.
No FTP for free sites.
I think 50mb limit.
Templets for new web designers. If you know nothing about web design you can make a web page in about an hour.
