Try making a simple polygon shape and fill it with the colour of choice. Then airbrush a bit with a lighter colour around the edges and center. Copy and rotate, then merge the two layers. Now, apply the Wave filter (Filters, Distort, Wave) and keep repeating the steps mentioned until you get the desired effect...

Try using different layer modes as well...resize the smoke u have and make it smaller, then place it in the corner where the smoke starts and set it to screen. copy that layer a few times and itll give a cool "central" smoke effect

Pretty good design, except that u should round some of the corners (specifically the one in the bottom right). Smoke flows, not turns.

I love to mess with Photoshop and many 3D editing programs

New Tip
You should try creating a basic shape and if you are using PS 6 try liquifing the image (Image>Liquify or Shift+Ctrl+X)and mess with the tools in there.
Good Luck

So, IceDevil, did you ever get what you needed?
I am also interested in making this effect and have been watching to see if you got a good answer.
I've tried the suggestions given and they haven't really worked for me.
I think your purple smoke looks really good. If I may ask - how did you do it?

hehe, you know what i forgot, i remember that the wave filter played a huge part in it.. i did it again.. but it wasnt as natural..
and if your wondering, IceDeViL and BKD are both me, just when i forgot my BKD account password, i made IceDeViL, then I found out my BKD one
oh and now I remember, i made a wacky lookin polygon, used the burn and dodge tool to highlight it, and i copied it, then i changed the layer mode to either multiply, screen, overlay, or colordoge, screwed with the opacity, then i used the wave filter a couple times, faded it, did it again, and twirl, its pretty random
this was my last attempt, long ago
