ayup, learning and getting used to the pen tool is probably one of the hardest things you will learn in PS, but, once you have a grasp of it you will be well on your way to being a PS Guru!! heh

The nicest thing about paths generated by the pen tool is that you can save them and edit them as much as you like, change the shape, add/remove anchor points, change the path into a selection , which tends to give you smoother edges.

It is the ultimate tool for making intricate and smooth selections.

Plus, once learned, paths are similar in alot of other graphic applications, especially vector apps (i.e. Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand).

it was actually done for another question where someone wanted to make angled corners and/or smooth rounded corners for an interface, but the same principles apply for this occasion.
